Project Objective: To locate and identify the remains of the SS Victorian.

Ship History: Iron screw steamer, built by D.& W. Henderson, Glasgow in 1876. 0.N.74779, 653grt & 354 net, (by 1878 718grt & 415 net). Date Event
5/1/1877 Arrived at Port Adelaide on her maiden voyage - entered into the interstate passenger trade
6/2/1877 The Victorian, outward bound from Adelaide to Melbourne, ran into and sank the new dredge Willunga - also causing £150 damage to herself.
10/12/1894 The S.S. Titus, one day out of Townsville, came up with the Victorian - which was disabled with a broken thrust shaft - and towed her to Sydney for repairs.
18/7/1895 Laid up in Johnson Bay, Pyrmont, Sydney with the steamers Emu and South Australian waiting to be put into commission for the passenger season.
22/8/1895 The Victorian caught fire, the upper works and accommodation starboard side being gutted.  Converted into a coal hulk, she was towed to Townsville.
6/12/1909 A M.H.T. license was granted to the Adelaide S.S.Co. to operate the Victorian as a coal/wool lighter, reg No. M.H.T. 38.
25/1/1923 When swinging to a berth at North Wharf, the White Star liner Gallic bumped into two coal lighters, and then crashed into South Wharf.  She first struck the Nor-Wester, which was forced onto the Victorian - the sides of which were damaged and the rails carried away.
28/10/1924 Last M.H.T. license renewal.
2/2/1925 Vessel offered for sale.
1925 Out of survey, the vessel was condemned and scuttled off Port Phillip Heads on May 8.

Project Status: Research continues. On-water searches to be conducted during 2007.
