The Belfast and Koroit Steamship Navigation company was started by the residents of Port Fairy in 1882 to provide more competitive shipping services along the Victorian coast. The first vessel of the company was the SS Casino which had a long and successful career for over 50 years. Disaster struck the company on 1932 when the popular Casino sank at Apollo Bay with the loss of 10 lives. The Coramba was purchased to replace the Casino and this was subsequently sunk in 1934 drowning all 17 crew. With the loss of two ships in 3 years, the deaths of 27 crew members and increasing competition from road and rail, the company was wound up in 1939.
