J Class Submarine Corrosion Measurements

Project Objective: To collect corrosion potential measurements on the J Class Submarines.

Project Detail: Corrosion measurements were collected from the J-Class Submarines in support of post graduate studies in maritime archaeology by James Beringer-Pooley from Flinders University. Part of this work resulted in a Management Plan for the Submarines being developed for the Maritime Heritage Unit of Heritage Victoria.

The corrosion measurement process involves collecting water samples from both inside and outside each submarine along with the base pH at the site. The pressure hull is cleaned back to bare metal using an air powered drill and the pH and electrical potential is measured with instruments supplied by the Maritime Heritage Unit and recorded.

Project Status: Data has been collected on J1, J2, J4, J5 and J7 and forwarded for analysis.

The project is complete.
